Meet Our Staff

Dr. William Maelia

My name is Dr. William Maelia and I am the founder of Science Research Academy. Science has always been a passion of mine and I began my teaching career as a high school chemistry teacher. I then was introduced to the concept of independent science research, and my outlook on scientific education at the secondary level was changed forever. I now have over a decade of experience in the Science Research world, working as the Director of Science Research at Somers High School in New York. I am also the Fair Director of the Somers Science Fair, the largest first-year science research student competition of its kind in the country. Additionally, I serve as the Site Chairperson on the Executive Board of the REGENERON Westchester Science & Engineering Fair, the largest regional high school science competition in the country.

In my time working with students on independent scientific research, I have seen the impact that this experience can have on them. My dissertation for my Doctoral degree from Northeastern University was titled, “The Effects of a Science Research Program and Experiential Learning Opportunity on High School Student Engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)”. Not only does this program foster students’ love for science, but it hones their skills that will be essential for their success as they move into their post-secondary education and eventual careers. Critical thinking, technical writing, how to conduct proper research, and the ability to speak in public and present a comprehensive academia-level presentation are all skills that will help students to succeed in their future endeavors, scientific in nature or not. I have a passion for research and engaging students in STEM through real-world research experience and I look forward to working with students here at the Science Research Academy as they embark on their own scientific journeys.

Mr. Jamie Dowd

My name is James Dowd and I am a former research scientist from California and currently a science teacher and the Director of Science Research at Ardsley High School in Westchester County, just outside of NYC. I have over a decade of experience in the R&D and Business Development in the Global Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical sector as well as an additional 13 years in the science classroom in San Francisco, (Lowell High School) and in New York. I currently serve as a board member for both the REGENERON Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF) and the Somers Science Fair, two of the largest science research student competitions of their kind in the country. I am proud to have several grand award winners at ISEF as well as award winning finalists for the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS), Genius Olympiad and the New York State Science & Engineering Fair (NYSSEF). My role guiding and supporting student researchers is more than just a job, it is a lifestyle and one of my greatest passions of my life. It is an honor to be a part of the Science Research Academy to lead students down such a personal research pursuit pathway and watch them thrive each step of the way.

Mr. Jerry Zupan
